Another Class of American Victims

Okay, I know this topic has been covered before and probably will be again. I just really want to put my two cents in, so bear with me.

There are some people in this world who have really gotten a raw deal. There are children born who are already addicted to heavy narcotics. There are elderly people on fixed incomes that are freezing to death in their own living rooms. There are men who work hard to support their families, but get laid off anyway. These people have it really rough, and they have all my sympathy.

You know what, though? There is an entirely different class of people vying for my sympathy who just aren't going to get it. They are America's self-declared victims, and I'm sorry, they really just don't qualify.

I can't count the number of times I have had Christians say to me, "You think being a Christian is easy? It isn't! It's a hard life, because everyone is against us. The atheistic government is holding back our free speech and interfering with the Biblical facts we want to teach our children. They won't let our children congregate and demonstrate faith in the schools! Society mocks us, and Satan tempts us with sex and money at every turn!"

However, it's not any less common for me to have an atheist speak to me and say, "Being an atheist is so hard on me! My self esteem is low because atheists are in the minority! They're constantly trying to put prayer and religion in schools, and the conservative Christian government doesn't want to raise a hand to stop it! I can't accomplish things in the name of atheism because the theists hate us. They're trying to make it impossible to teach my children scientific fact, and they thrust God in my face at every turn!"

Okay, sorry folks, but they can't both be right. I will admit, straight up and honest, that my first inclination is to sympathize with the atheist plight. I am, after all, an atheist myself. There's a little more to this, though. In most cases, it's simply a matter of people taking themselves too seriously and making mountains out of molehills.

To the Christians: You are in the physical majority in this country. Although Muslims are a quickly growing group and we have not inconsequential numbers of Jews and other religions, you are currently still the majority. If you outnumber everyone else, they can't be discriminating against you too badly. Besides, it's still considered popular for various politicians, actors, writers, and other famous people to declare for God and country, especially in the wake of September 11. So you've got a lot of backing.

The government is not atheistic, it's neutral, as it is supposed to be. Anyway, most politicians have already declared for Christianity. They teach evolution in school because that is science. You can teach creatioinism at home and at church. And by the way, your children are not prohibited from praying in school, to themselves or in groups. They jsut can't do it out loud during class time. They can pray before lunch, before school, between classes, and after school. They can also read their Bibles any time they aren't supposed to be doing something else (like taking a math quiz). No one's stopping them, so stop whining that they are.
