  1. How did your family react to your atheism?
  2. Does your atheism make your relationship difficult?
  3. Have you lost any friends over your atheism?
  1. How did your family react to your atheism?

My mother and father were upset, but over time they have come to understand that I am still the same moral person they always believed me to be. The hardest obstacle to overcome was their belief that my atheism somehow made me a different person completely, which of course it did not. The members of my family, both immediate and extended, have let me know that they love me as they always have, regardless. As one cousin put it, they believe it would not be christian of them to do otherwise.

  3. Does your atheism make your relationship difficult?

Actually, no. My Christian husband knew I was an atheist when we first started dating (we both belonged to the same organization, and it had come up before). So he knew what he was getting. We both respect each other's beliefs, and the right to hold different beliefs. We have to compromise here and there, but generally the difference in belief doesn't even come up. He doesn't even mind when I make little religious jokes.

  5. Have you lost any friends over your atheism?

Again, no. I have a few friends who tiptoe around the subject, and a few friends with whom the subject just never comes up. But I have not lost a single friend. Of course, many of my friends are pagans, or religion neutral. And the ones who are Christian tend to be fairly open-minded. I like to think I help with that. I do know a few people who haven't yet reconciled the idea of me and atheism together (these are friends of a more fundemental stripe), but they seem more confused than anything else.
